Unable to Change Source within Data Source Settings for Semantic Models - October 2024 Update

Hi,

After rebooting my company laptop this morning I haven't been able to change the source within the data source settings for semantic model connections in Power BI Desktop. Whenever I click 'Change Source' a new 'hidden' pop-up window appears in my taskbar, but I can't see it anywhere, and it only appears as a white empty window in the task bar. I can however connect to a "new" semantic model without any issues, the issue only exists when trying to change the connection for an exisitng semantic model.

I can see that Power BI Desktop was updated to the newest version (Version: 2.134.7447.1 64-bit (October 2024)) after the reboot, as part of the company's auto update policies. As such, I strongly assume that this new update brought along the issue, as no security updates has been deployed this week by my company's InfoSec team. Furthermore, a team member with an older version of Power BI Desktop is not facing this issue.

This issue is preventing us from testing updates to semantic models on reports in Power BI Desktop, effectively blocking our weekly deployment.

Any help here would be much appreciated.

Thank you,

Updated the topic to highlight the issue only seems to exist for semantic models. I can change the source of a SQL connection without any issues.

Hi @LaMatt

Previously the Microsoft Store released the October version early and some of the new features caused some issues in use, PBI Desktop has now been uploaded with the correct version (2.135.7627.0 9/20/2024), you can re-open it after re-updating your version of PBI Desktop to see if there are any issues.

I am also experiencing this issue in desktop version 2.137.751.0 64-bit.

EDIT: The error is applicable in my case to editing existing DirectQuery connections to Semantic Models. Editing an existing connection to SharePoint is unaffected.

I'm also unable to change the source in Power BI desktop since the October release from this week. (version 2.137.751.0 64-bit)

The error seems to be related to editing existing DirectQuery - Power BI Semantic Models.

Hello, I also identified this problem yesterday. I'll follow this thread to be in line of the solution. Before I know this thread I posted this: https://community.fabric.microsoft.com/t5/Desktop/Power-BI-Desktop-Application-Bug-in-Data-Source-Se...

A moment solution is install the previous version of Power BI. I did it and works well.

Just adding another +1 - can't change the semantic model in a report in 2.137.751.0 64-bit (October 2024).

Having to diagnose the problem, look for candidate bugs in this forum and finally roll-back to the previous version of PowerBI to maintain updated reports for 300+ users (for the second time since summer).

Yet another +1 for this issue.  We share Power BI reports (PBIX) and Semantic Models (PBIT) with external partners.  After the October 2024 update, the template still works great for the model, but our reports load the hidden blank window when trying to edit the semantic model connection and Power BI desktop essentially freezes.
