A documented limitation of Composite Models is that using SAP Business Warehouse (BW) as a DirectQuery source is not supported.
Use composite models in Power BI Desktop - Power BI | Microsoft Learn
However, based upon testing, an SAP BW Connector query causes the failure of a composite model in Power BI Service even if the BW Connector query is in Import Mode.
A simple model contains two tables:
- "BW Connector" (uses SAP Business Warehouse Connector, in Import mode)
- "PBI Semantic Model" (DirectQuery connection to a Power BI semantic model)
No measures, calculated columns, calculated tables, or relationships exist in the model. Visuals for the report are displayed properly in Power BI Desktop.
Upon publish to Power BI Service, the visual using data from the Power BI semantic model (DirectQuery) fails with "There is no available gateway", "An exception occured due to an on premise service issue", and "Error fetching data for this visual" errors.
Removing either table from the model clears the errors and allows data to be displayed correctly.
