Desktop Error Message Stuck in Continuous Loop

Sometimes I get an error message like the one below:

I know what the error message represents - that's not the problem. The problem with this error message is that I cannot make it go away: If I click on "report the issue" the error message will close once I have reported the issue and then re-appear; if I click on "cancel" it was close and then immediately re-appear; if I close the window by clicking the "X" icon, it will close and re-appear. 

 

My only option then is to open task manager and force-quit Power BI.

 

The error message gets stuck in a continuous loop.

Which Power BI desktop version do you run? How about the result when you try the latest Power BI desktop version 2.66.5376.2521? 

 

If issue still occurs, would you please record a video to show the issue and share Power BI desktop trace log with us? You can upload them to your Onedrive and send the share link to me via private message.

I have just observed the same issue. My Power BI Desktop version is 2.78.5740.721 64-bit.

I have been sent a pbix-file for evaluation.  When opening the file a warning message has been shown that this file has been saved in an older version of Power BI Desktop which has been optimized for the Power BI Report Server (I don't know which version exactly).

After closing that message Power BI Desktop is trying to load the data, but the SQL Server database cannot be accessed (which I already know). A connection dialog is shown, but I can only change username and password, but not the SQL Server instance and database name. Therfore I close the dialog using Cancel. An error message about loading the data is shown. Close is the only button in this dialog.

Then Power BI Desktop is trying to render the report and after some seconds an error message is shown that the SQL Server instance cannot be reached (which I already know). Closing this dialog shows the error message which has been mentioned in the first posting and I am stuck in the same continous loop which is described in the first posting.

Solving the problem would be very easy, but I get no chance from Power BI desktop to this. It's only changing the connection string.

The model is accessing the database using DirectQuery. It consists of one fact table and a time dimension.

I will update Power BI desktop to the latest version and try again.

There's even worse than that: work on a current file with you usual Power BI desktop on a live connection. Then if by disgrace your VPN drops when you're refreshing the data, Power BI will be stuck in that loop even if/when the VPN connection is re-established.

Result: all your work will be lost because there's no way to click on save: only option is to kill the app.

 

@v-qiuyu-msftI don't pretend Power BI to be so smart to return an error as Excel/Pivot and stop querying further values until told to do so, but at least give us an option to "Cancel and don't ask anymore until next refresh".
