AnalysisServices connection using msmdpump.dll: Object reference not set to an instance of an object

Unable to connect to website set up for cross domain Tabular Model (Import) using msmdpump.dll and BASIC authentication.  Site is set up as described by microsoft in:

From searching the community, etc - it seems this is a result of a change in PowerBI, as it was previously available.

The error is:  Details: "AnalysisServices: Object reference not set to an instance of an object."
