cannot sign into PowerBI desktop

I am having an issue with PowerBI Desktop where I cannot Sign in.  I click on the Sign in button, it opens a dialog asking for my email -- email address is correct -- and I click Continue.  Nothing happens, and I am not signed in.  Similar issue happens when trying to Publish.  Note that I am able to sign into app.powerbi.com using the same email address.

 

I activated trace logging and I see this message:

1. Check if you have a valid Power BI account and is using the correct credentials to sign in.
2. Ensure that you have the necessary permissions to access Power BI Desktop.
3. Verify that your computer meets the minimum system requirements for Power BI Desktop.
4. Check if there are any firewall or network issues that may be preventing the user from signing in.
5. Try resetting the user's password and have them attempt to sign in again.

Thank you for the feedback, but none of these seem to apply in my case.  In particular, with regard to points 1 and 5, Power BI is never prompting for a password -- when attempting to log in or publish, it pops up a dialog asking for my email address (which is correct), and then after clicking continue, nothing happens.

 

Note that I am able to use Power BI Desktop in an offline mode, connect to databases in Azure and create local reports, so aside from the sign in problem, the application seems to be functioning correctly.

I'm having the same issue in Power BI Desktop.   Try to login through ribbon,  prompted for email address (with no password box), click ok but nothing happens and no error message.  

 

Things I've tried that did not work: 

1. Uninstalling and reinstalling Power BI desktop (including deleting all residual files from the uninstall). 

2. Turning off all firewalls on my computer. 

3.  Running PowerBI desktop as administrator .

4.  Turning on and off certificate revocation option in Power BI options .

5.  Turning on and off the updated Power BI sign in experience in PBI options. 

6.  Turn on and off my company's VPN. 

 

I'm having no trouble reaching the Power BI cloud site.

That is just plain stupid that the app does NOT invoke sign in
