TypeConversionFailure when not trying to convert

Running a Copy Data node inside a Data Pipeline, we get the following error message:

ErrorCode=TypeConversionFailure,Exception occurred when converting value '16.12.1985' for column name '33_ColumnName' from type 'String' (precision:, scale:) to type 'Date' (precision:, scale:). Additional info: String was not recognized as a valid DateTime.

However, we are not asking for a converision:

The problem was that the destination already contained rows, and so datatypes had been set. In the Destination tab, under Advanced, I changed Table action to Overwrite.
