SharePoint List incorrectly identified as cloud data source

Reports containing on-premise SharePoint data sources incorrectly identified as cloud data sources in Power BI Service.  In screenshot below, SharePoint list data source type was chosen in Power BI Desktop, NOT SharePoint Online List.  This is confusing our customers who don't think they need a gateway connection.  Have seen this issue since Jan 2020.

Hi @RapidPulse

I would suggest you double check the Sharepoint site URL you specified for Sharepoint lit data source, does it point to a on-premises SharePoint instance exactly?

When you type the SharePoint site URL after you choose SharePoint list data source in Power BI desktop, which credential did you choose to connect to the SharePoint list? From the screenshot, please click on Edit Credential, then enter the same credential to see if it's verified successfully.

Thank you for the response.

Everything works fine in Power BI Desktop.  I can connect to the on-premise SharePoint list using my Windows credentials and create the report.

When report is published, I see the message in screenshot implying this is a cloud data source.  Clicking Edit credentials and entering my Windows credentials results in error  (no surprise there...that shouldn't work without a gateway!).

I can create a gateway data source to the SharePoint list and everything works correctly.

Things are working as they are supposed to.  The issue is the confusion caused by the message stating that gateway is not required.  It is.

Note:  I did not discover this issue. It was reported to me and I was able to easily reproduce.

Hi @RapidPulse

I'm not able to reproduce the issue on my side with two accounts, one has gateway configured and the other doesn't have any gateway. You can see the message is not misleading.

Please run the latest Power BI desktop version 2.79.5768.721 64-bit (March 2020) then open the report, republish report to see if you got the same message.
