Row level security using Power BI Service Data set

Hi,

Please can you explain if i can use the Row Level Security functionality when connecting to a Power BI Service data set?

I have created Model A with Security Roles

Published Model A to a workpace

Created the roles in the workspace and added user 1 to that role.

User 1 only has read access to the Workspace

User 1 the tries to connect to the workspace in the desktop

User 1 can see the workspace but not the data model

If i change this to chnge the access to edit

User 1 the tries to connect to the workspace in the desktop

User 1 can see the workspace and now can see the data model

User 1 now has full access (which i dont want them to have)

Any ideas?

I’ve reported it internally to Power BI Team: CRI 40975228
I’ll post here once I get any update about it.

I’ve got response from the Product Team.

To do live connect to PowerBI dataset from desktop, the user requires edit access to the workspace. And RLS rules are not applied for users with edit access to the workspace.

What the customer can do is publish the dataset containing RLS rules as a content pack and share it with other users. Once he has done that, then the other users against which content pack is published, can install the content pack and make a copy of the content pack using "Make a copy" option  under dataset. The users can then connect to dataset created upon making a copy of the installed content pack. This will have RLS rules applied.
