Old BUG is back - Unable to connect: Can't open report after deleting / replacing dataset

Data Source published in Power BI Service deleted,... - Microsoft Fabric Community

Re: Cant open my pbix file after deleting dataset ... - Microsoft Fabric Community

Solved: please contact the owner of the dataset after dele... - Microsoft Fabric Community

....

And I'm certain there are more the issue is that this issue was previoulsy resolved and it's happening again.  When the data set online is deleted and then replaced the reports the point to it can't be opened.  You get

Geoff_Ellis_0-1708625101457.png

and you can hit retry all you like it just comes back to the same dialog and then when you hit Edit you get

the same outcome occurs if you open file directly or open power bi connect to the data source then try to open the report that needs to reconnect to the "new" data source with the same name.

Hi  @Geoff_Ellis

So normally, when you delete this semantic model and then connect to this semantic model in Power BI Desktop, you're going to get that can't connect, and then go through edit, and change it to another semantic model that exists, right?

Following the steps you mentioned, I tested it and when I clicked edit, the page to select a new semantic model popped up. My test version is Version: 2.126.927.0 64-bit (February 2024). You can update your Power BI Desktop to the latest version and try again .

Found a resolution on current version. Launched PowerBI with administrator rights then when presented with the edit button it went to a dialog to choose the new data source instead of the error page.
