New Format pane issues

Data, Format, Bookmar, Selection, Sync slicer ribbon tab buttons are toggle buttons. Perf. analyzer button doesn't work like a toggle button, while it does the same as the other buttons - shows/closes a pane on the right side of the window. Looks like a (minor) bug.

V then Close and X button on a pane header both remove the pane

Not necessary to have duplicate buttons for the same action.
"Collapse" is a confusing name, it hides the pane, not collapsing groups on the pane.

Remove V button at all, replace it with > button and make the entire pane title clickable, so it's easier to hide a pane in one click (w/o clicking on a small pane icon on the toolbar).

Also, I don't think it makes any sense at all to remove icons from the toolbar as long as the toolbar remains on the screen. Keep the entire toolbar with all 6 icons (Data, Format, Bookmar, Selection, Sync slicer, Perf. Analyzer) always visible (like the too bar on the left is always vsible with report/data/model view icons). Make ribbon Data, Format, Bookmar, Selection, Sync slicer, Perf. Analyzer toggle buttons to show/hide corresponding panes, but not to remove icons from the toolbar. No need to have 'close' action for the panes anymore. We can just hide them.

Status: Investigating

Hi @avatorl ,

Sorry maybe I misunderstand. How do you get the toggle buttons in the snapshot.

Hi @avatorl ,

If you would like to suggest  feature improvements, you may vote the idea and comment here  to improve this feature. It is a place for customers provide feedback about Microsoft Office products . What’s more, if a feedback is high voted there by other customers, it will be promising that Microsoft Product Team will take it into consideration when designing the next version in the future.

It's preview feature and what I described is rather bug fixing, not ideas for new features... But yeah, 'delivered'.

@v-yanjiang-msft, thanks for getting back to the issue.

it's March 2023 version with 'on-object interactions' preview feature enabled.

Issue 1: All buttons on the View ribbon tab work like toggle buttons, except 'Performance analyzer' button. It doesn't have 'pressed' state.

Issue 2: When all toggle buttons are unpressed and then any toggle button is pressed, it opens corresponding pane, but does not display vertical toolbar. When more than one toggle button is pressed there is a vertical toolbar. Very inconsistent behavior.

Issue 3: After closing and reopening Power BI Desktop all previously pressed toggle buttons become unpressed, except Filters and Data.
Issue 4: Buttons on View ribbon tab and on the vertical toolbar use the same Icons and it's very inconvinient that they work differently. Ribbon button opens a corresponding pane AND adds a button to the vertical toolbar (but not always, see issue 2). Vertical toolbar buttons only open/close panes. The best solution here is to alwasy keep vertical bar visible with all toggle buttons available on the pane. There is no need to remove buttons from the vertical toolbar at all. This vertical toolbar is really great idea, just need to work properly.
Issue 5: Duplicate close button/menu item. Also, the close button close the pane and removes a button from the vertical toolbar (and the entire toolbar if there were only 2 buttons visible). It's very confusing. Close button on a pane close more than just the pane. No close button is required at all, since there is a vertical toolbar with toggle buttons to show/hide the panes.

Issue 5: When 'Add or remove visual elements' button clicked (on a custom visual, so there are no checkboxes for title, axes, labels), there is only 'More options' button which does nothing (when Format pane is already open) or open format pane. Also very inconvinient. No need to use a button that does nothing or does the same what other buttons do (the ribbon toggle buttons and the vertical toolbar buttons). Open format pane when 'Add to your visual' button is clicked (no need in additional button, add 'See format pane for more options' label instead of the button) or find better way to avoid inconvinient behavior (buttons that does nothing).

It's a feedback to a preview feature, which is basically a betta version of a feaure, I understand that it have bugs and other issues, but I don't think feedback regarding the issues should be treated as an 'idea' that requires voting. Please investigate and make the ribbon toggle buttons, the vertical toolbar toggle buttons, the panes and 'Add to your visual' pop-up working together consistently and it will be one of the best Power BI improvements (it saves space on the screen, allows to switch between panes faster and access visual formattion options faster).
