Error when loading data -Internal error: Reference to undeclared entity 'nbsp'. Line 29, position 33

When trying to aceess XML data from Australian Burea of Statistics (ABS) through the http://stat.data.abs.gov.au/ service using the SDMX (XML) download service, I reguarly run into issues with the following error -

Processing error:Xml processing failed. Either the input is invalid or it isn't supported. (Internal error: Reference to undeclared entity 'nbsp'. Line 29, position 3

This is an intermittent error and occurs in different locations associated with downloadin the data. It reguarly pops up when using the service and setting automatic refresh. However, some refreshes work and others fail. The following is an example of refresh errors. There have been no changes to the file during this period.

This particular file can also refresh fine using PBI Desktop.

The same error has also been occuring on a PBI Desktop file intermittently when looking at the Query Editor refresh but when you go out of Query Editor and refresh it works file.

As the XML data is all web based I am not needed to refresh through a Gateway and I am able to use Conect Directly.

I have contacted the ABS and they have reviewed their XML data and it does not have any mention of nbsp in the XML and does not have any errors in. The fact that this error is intermittent and that PBI Desktop can refresh the data makes me think that the issue is somthing to do with PBI rather than the XML data.

All the errors that I am getting for this problem come up with the same message about nbsp'. Line 29, position 3.

Can somone please look into this issue.

Thank you for your assistance.

I am happy an example PBI file that will demonstrate the issue if you can let me know where to send this to.

This keeps happening to many of my datasets over the last couple of days - is there something going on with Power BI itself?

These errors keep happening to my datasets recently - I think there must be something going on with Power BI rather than the data...

This has been happening for quite some time for me. Here is some more detail about the error that I am getting:

  • What happens in Power BI desktop on initial data load then subsequent refreshes

The refresh in Power BI Desktop is not an issue at all. In the query view most of the time it is fine but I have had some instances where this error comes up.

  • Can you reproduce the errant behaviour exactly on the PowerBI.com ?

The error comes up most of the time on PowerBI.com and is replicable

  • Is it always the second refresh that fails?

The refresh error on PowerBI.com comes most of the time with scheduled refresh or refresh on demand.

  • Will it always fail from 2nd onwards or is it intermittent?

The error is intermittent.

I can send an example file if I can get your e-mail. @v-haibl-msft @Vicky_Song

I can send a file example to somone at Microsoft if I can get an e-mail.

Thank you.

I have now tested this through an alternative Microsoft Tenant that we have and I am getting the same result. @v-haibl-msft have you been able to replicate this error? As the data is web based I am using Conect Directly to conect to the data not a Gateway.

Thank you very much for your assistance with this error.

@Vicky_Song I have now sent @v-haibl-msft the PBI Desktop file as well as additional background information via private message but have not heard anything back at this stage. This issue is still marked as Needs Info if there is any additional information that I am able to provide please let me know and I would be very happy to provide any further assistance that I can. I hope that you are able to assist with a solution to this issue.

Thanks for your detailed info. I can repro the same issue now. I’ve reported it internally to Power BI Team: CRI 32003316

I’ll post here once I get any update about it.

Thank you very much for your asistance. Greatly aprecaited. Note that the easy answer to this issue is that the problem is in the XML data and that you should replacing   with &#160. However, this does not seem to be the real answer as the ABS who the data come from say that the XML does not have &nbsp in the XML. Also when you try and run any of the data queries to get the SDMX XML data the error does not come up. It seems to only be an issue when you start to manipulate the data in Power BI that there is the issue. Additionally it seems strange that it works fine in Desktop but not on the Service. Feel free to contact the person at the ABS that is in the e-mail chain that I have sent to you. He will be able to provide further inforamtion about their data and if an issue can be identified with their data he would be able to look into it from their end. However, at this stage they are saying that it is not an issue with their data and he has done some testing on it. I have also tried to look for &nbsp in the data and have not been able to find this anywhere.

Thank you very much for your assistance. As the ABS is the largest supplier of economic data in Australia we are very keen to be able to get this working with Power BI.
