thank you!

It happened recurrently when changing the Name of the source-file in the desktop, and click on "apply changes and close".

Steps:

I copied a pbix and its Excel-source and renamed both of them form "Example7"xlsx/pbix to "Example8"xlsx/pbix - a crude attempt to versioning so that I do not loose progress I made.

I could open both of them individually in Excel and PowerBIDesktop. But of course the pbix still had the "old" source. I changed the name in the "Benutzerleiste" from 7 to 8, and tried to re-apply.

Both Excel as well as pbix  -  original as well as copied and renamed ones - are in a Dropbox-Folder.

According to your description, it seems that you want to replace the original data source with a new one in the Power BI desktop, there are two ways:

1. Go to Transform data-> data source setting, change the source of data:

2. Go to the power query editor, advanced editor, replace the file path to change the data source manually:

Before updating your data source, you should first check if the column name and data type are the same as the columns in the original Excel file. If not, you will get an error.

Then you should update the reference of the next steps according to your actual situation.
