When trying to refresh our 'Admin monitoring report' based on the Power BI Admin API, I received an error which indicated that a certain dataset did not exist:
OLE DB or ODBC error: [DataSource.Error] Web.Contents failed to get contents from 'https://api.powerbi.com/v1.0/myorg/admin/datasets/5434a7af-90a9-4acf-9358-c321508ef0ad/datasources' (404): Not Found.
I checked this via a separate API call which resulted in the dataset to not be found:
I managed to trace back to the workspace and to my suprise the dataset did exist there:
When checking the dataset itself it provided a 404 as well as the warning below:
It seems like the datasource(s) vanishes when the dataset configurator is deleted from the AAD.
After taking over the dataset (1st try caused an error), performing the same API call again the dataset can be found again:
Dataset configurators being deleted is never completely preventable from a functional perspective, hopefully there is a solution to prevent this from happening, so this scenario doesn't break the refresh of Power BI Admin monitoring reports.
