'Couldn't load the model schema' message when connected to company VPN

When starting 64bit Power BI Desktop on Windows Server 2012, I immediately get the message "Couldn't load the model schema". Subsequently, When I try to load data, say an Excel file, I get the same message and the load fails.

If I disconnect from the company VPN, startup behaves normally, and the load of the Excel data does not fail.

in case it could help here is the result from Copy Details... when you close that window and acces the Report screen in the region at right, under "Fields" there is an icon kind of "on progress" (the typicall little balls that round and round) and nothing appears...

Hi All,

Could you please follow these steps and send us the info that we're requesting below?

  1. Uninstall your current PBI Desktop
  2. Disable strong key verification using batch file from sn.zip shared here (you can restore everything back afterwards)
  3. Install our instrumented PBI Desktop build shared here
  4. Try out Desktop.
  5. Please let us know what happens, and please send us all the trace files in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Power BI Desktop\Trace, as well as recent subfolders in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Power BI Desktop\AnalysisServicesWorkspaces.

Best Regards,
Herbert

Same result as before. I did not notice any difference in behavior. The files you requested can be found at the link below.

Thanks, Matthew

(Please send the batch file that restores everything back.)

To restore everything back afterwards, you only need to change “reg add” to “reg delete” in sn.bat and run it once.

Herbert

The instrumented PBI Desktop build has the same problem.

Could you help confirm that you can open Desktop and create any visual in June version of PBI Desktop, or you can open Desktop but could not create visual?

This is an issue that is specific to the user’s platform. To get to the bottom of the case, we need you to set up a repro machine and give Microsoft permission to remotely log in, install diagnostics software, and run debugging software.

Herbert
