Unable to use dataflow on Pro workspace

I have a Pro Workspace, where I created some Dataflows

They are set up correctly and no issues with the refresh

When I tried to use one of them in my model, I could connect to it and refresh connections/data with no issues in Power BI Desktop but when i published my report, I am unable to refresh the Semantic Model through the service once it is published to https://app.powerbi.com/

I have checked the Semantic Model authentication method and selected PowerPlatformDataflow

Wich is set in the service with

The Dataflow and the Semantic Model are in the same Pro licensed Workspace but I keep getting this error

According to https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-query/dataflows/what-licenses-do-you-need-in-order-to-use-da... I should be able to use Dataflows in  a Pro Workspace. I did see that there are limitations like, DirectQuery connection option to the dataflow, you need to have Power BI P1 or A3 or higher capacities. So I tried changing it to import mode for that Dataflow and it still failed to refresh.

Why can I not use my Dataflow in my Semantic Model?

Status: Investigating

Hi @Analyst-Rene

So what you are saying is that when you use dataflow(legacy),the semantic model that you connect to dataflow can be refreshed normally, right? What is the current version of PBI Desktop you are using? Have you encountered similar issues before this? I see below that some users have reported this issue after upgrading to the August version, so if you downgrade to a previous version, can you use the dataflow connector normally?

I have found the issue, after doing some more testing - I managed to get my report to refresh in the Power BI Service but I had to change my model to use the 'Power BI dataflows (Legacy)' connection rather than the 'Dataflows' connection

It now works and I can schedule a refresh on my Semantic Model (tested both scheduled and manual refresh)

So, why can I only use the Legacy connection and not the new Dataflows connection? Does this meen that what I am trying to do is not supported in the new Dataflows connection? Will it be supported in future or will I have to keep using the Legacy connection?

Why is the error message so misleading?

(sorry for the bombardment of questions but I would like to learn why)

Hi @v-yetao1-msft - yes, the dataflow(legacy) works. I was using the August release as well, that was pushed out recently - I didn't have an issue with the new dataflow connector before the latest release and I also have another issue https://community.fabric.microsoft.com/t5/Issues/There-is-an-issue-with-the-new-dark-mode-you-can-t-... where they also suggested I revert back to an older version. I am on leave for the next few days so I will have to do that when I get back, for now, my reports are using the legacy connector so that users don't have issues while I am away. I will look at the new Dataflow connector when I am back in 10 days and let you know days. Thanks for the suggestion.

I've managed to solve this by deleting PowerBI (I had the store version) and reinstalling through the desktop installer. The dataflows could only be loaded in Import mode and not in DirectQuery previously, in the store version of PowerBI, after teh August 2024 update. When I've switched to legacy PowerBI.Dataflow dataflows it worked fine even in that version.

But PowerPlatform.Dataflow only worked after reinstalling the dekstop app.
