Compete to become Power BI Data Viz World Champion! First round ends August 18th. Get started.

Unable to retrieve the data flows, error AADSTS50158: External security challenge not satisfied.

I am just trying to get the data flows available for my report.

I have asked to sing-in again, so I put all my data, including the MFA data as well, and after this I receive an erros like bellow:

AADSTS50158: External security challenge not satisfied. User will be redirected to another page or authentication provider to satisfy additional authentication challenges.
Trace ID: 991ededc-8b98-485b-a33d-3c7014286601

Timestamp: 2022-12-04 19:47:38Z. https://login.microsoftonline.com/error?code=50158

After this, in the same computer, I logged through the browser, with the same login data and the same MFA, and it works perfectly.

So the error just happen on Power BI Desktop App.

Could you help me how to solve this issue?

Thank you.

Hi @Anonymous

Please correct me if I wrongly understood your issue . You can sign in Power BI Service with your account then access the dataflow , but when you use the same account to get dataflow in Power BI Desktop ,you get an error and cannot access the dataflow , right ?

Hi @Anonymous ,
I am also facing the same issue. Let me elaborate on what I am experiencing.
So I have created a workspace and I have my dataflow created from the powerBI service(through a browser) .
Now in order to work on the same dataflow data from the Power-BI desktop, I am trying to connect to the dataflow(from the Get data option), and it redirected me to our MFA authentication platform (O365) where I chose my official account. But it was throwing this error.
I tried through VPN as well, but still, it threw this error due to which I am unable to access the dataflow in my powerBI-desktop.

Hi everyone!

I'm having the same issue over here.

When I try to connect a published dataflow on Power BI Service to Desktop, ask me for my credentials but it shows the same error message.

Also shows the same error message when I try to access Power Apps:

Does somebody have already resolved this issue?

Thanks a lot for the help!

In regards to the initial query by the user Anonymous it seems they left out what app they were using to access the Dataflows.
@Anonymous Do you have an autheticator setup for your account? You seem to have the same or smilar issue as a user of mine. When accessing a Dataflows from Excel they get that error, however there colleauge does not. The only difference we determined was that user a (no issue) had an authenticator setup in there mysigns for their security info and user b (with the issue) does not. However we use DUO.

What I've been able to gather for my user is that the authentication is defferent from with in Excel versus via Power Bi. Its as if its flowing through two different ways. I'm having my user add a method to her account to see what happens.

Since I don't know how Dataflows are setup yet, I wonder if there is permissions/authentications with in the DataFlow or since we are in an Enterprise environmet if there is some place holder that needs corrected from an Admin side.

UPDATE: We narrowed down to as user is failing due to a "terms of use" window attempting to show up but that is failling to show. Just need to determine now what terms of use.
