Q&A not working while I'm using an on premise Tabular server.

Hi,

I have a tabular server connected to Power BI through the gateway.

its working fine.

but the Q&A is not working

when I activate the Q&A on my dashboard I see this message:

Q&A is not available for any of the datasets used on this dashboard.

but the report pinned in the dashboard is connected to my tabular, the Q&A option is activated in both the report ans the dataset.

my Tabular model is a direct query model, is it why Power BI didn't try to use it?

I do not see any constraint documentted about this

Have you checked the limitations listed in this document?

• Initially the feature is only available for SQL Server 2016 Analysis Services data sources. The feature is optimized to work with tabular data. Some functionality is available for multi-dimensional data sources, but the full Q&A experience is not yet supported for this dataset type. Additional data sources supported by the enterprise gateway will be rolled out during the public preview.

• Full support for row level security defined in the SQL Server Analysis Services is not available initially in the public preview. While asking questions in Q&A, the “auto-complete” of questions while typing can show string values a user does not have access to. However, RLS defined in the model is respected for report and chart visuals so no underlying numerical data can be exposed. Options to control this behavior will be released in coming updates.

• Q&A does not work with Power BI Gateway-Personal data sources.

Thanks, I know the document you mention. and its the point. I'm using SSAS 2016 in Tabular mode. and I allready saw the Q&A working fine on a similar environment. but the servers I'm working on today are not working. the only different: I'm using a tabular model which is in direct query mode. but its still SSAS 2016 Tabular, and the documentation didnt say that the feature is limited to in memory models. so is it working in direct query mode? if yes, why in my environment its not working and what I have to validate or change to make it working?

I just test the same scenario as you (Direct Query to SSAS 2016 Tabular), I can see the Q&A bar after I enable the option in Dataset and dashboard.

I suggest you to create a support ticket at http://support.powerbi.com (see bottom of page).
