Performance degradation on powerbi refresh

I just had a refresh hang (unresponsive to cancellation) to the point that cancelling doesn't work and I needed to download and overwrite the report on the server.

Report performance now that I've forced a refresh is abysmal.

Hi @sethcc ,

Performance degradation during Power BI refresh can occur for a variety of reasons, but there are several steps you can take to mitigate the issue:

1. Optimize your queries: Make sure your queries are as efficient as possible by removing unnecessary data and using appropriate filters. You can also use query folding to push more processing to the data source, which can improve performance.

2. Reduce the size of your dataset: If your dataset is too large, consider breaking it up into smaller datasets or using incremental refresh to only refresh the data that has changed since the last refresh.

3. Use DirectQuery or Live Connection: If your data source supports it, consider using DirectQuery or Live Connection instead of importing data into Power BI. This can reduce the amount of data that needs to be refreshed and improve performance.

4. Use a dedicated capacity: If you are using Power BI Premium, consider using a dedicated capacity for your workspace. This can provide more resources and improve performance.

5. Monitor performance: Use the Power BI Performance Analyzer to identify bottlenecks and areas for improvement in your queries and data model.

By following these steps, you can help ensure that your Power BI refreshes are running as efficiently as possible and avoiding performance degradation.

Best regards.

This is not an issue with the report or queries, it runs fine the vast majority of the time, it just failed to refresh and required manual intervention.

The degredation is Power BI service side, and was transient, but not noted in any service status dashboards.
