Once published, map plots same address in different locations for different users.

I'm running into an issue where, after publishing, a map visual plots some addreses in the wrong location but only for viewers other than the creator/publisher. Viewing the same report in browser, the addresses are plotted to the correct location for me but wrong location for other users. Is there some setting that could be causing this? I'm at a loss for how this could be...

Hi @tbernard ,

Based on the information you have provided, it is difficult to directly reproduce your problem.

In order to better help you,do you mind telling how to reproduce your problem?
Or provide a sample pbix without sensitive information, thanks in advance.

Thanks for the response but I couldn't tell you how to reproduce the problem because I don't know how to reproduce the problem. Again, the pbix files plots addresses correctly and, once publushed, they are plotted correctly for me - just not other users viewing the published version. So, it does not seem to be an issue with the pbix file (or even the published version) but, somehow, the issue seems to be tied to other users.

I will continue testing on my side with the goal of reproducing this issue in a file without sensitive information. I don't know that I'll be able to do that but, if I can, I'll upload that as a sample for you.

If I'm not able to produce a sample, are there any common reasons why a published report would produce different results (i.e., plot addresses in different locations) for different users?

Thank you.

Hi @tbernard ,

What data category did you select for this column? Go to the Modeling tab, select the Location column and set the data category to Location or Address. If the category is set to "Uncategorized", does the map display the location correctly?

Does the problem persist if I combine the country and city names to navigate to the appropriate location?

You may earch for these locations on Bing Maps itself (bing.com/maps) to see if they are displayed correctly.

Or try to update your desktop to the latest version to test.

Besides, please review this article which provide several tips to increase the likelihood of correct geo-coding.

Caitlyn - Thank you for the continued support and ideas. To address each of your questions / points:

The data fields are categorized so that shouldn't be the issue.

However, right now I've got a single Address field that contains address, city, state, and zip. I'll attempt restructiring the data as individual data points for address, city, state, and zip and then form a geo-hierarchy to see that fixes the problem. That should help, it's just strange that (if that were the issue) addresses would plot correctly for me but not others.

When searching the addresses on Bing Maps itself, they display the correct locations. So, that doesn't seem to be the issue either.

I will get my desktop program updated to the latest version to make sure that isn't part of the issues.

Reading through the article you provided, the only thing that stood out as a potential issue is what I mentioned above relative to breaking Address out as separate fields.

Again, thanks for all of the information. The strange part about this all continues to be the plotting working correctly for me (both in desktop and browser) but not other users; it seems to be some sort of a user-based setting (or other user-based differentiation).

More to come after I can test further.

Thanks,

TJ

@Anonymous - Caitlyn,

I've created a simple .pbix file, without sensitive data, that shows the issues that we are running into (at least on our side). How can I get this to you for review since there is no option to upload? Please feel free to email me at tbernard@qawealthmanagement.com for the sample files.

Again, for the sample report, when I access this report in browser after publishing, all addresses plot at the correct locations in MN. The same is true for one of the other users. But, for a third user, the addresses all plot at incorrect locations. Is there any reason why this could be?

I still have yet to restructure the main report's data to break address info up into address, city, state, and zip separately but will do that when I have the chance. Just the same, is there anything that would cause a difference experince accross various users?

Thanks for the help,

TJ Bernard

Hi @tbernard ,

To my knowledge, I'm afraid I can't give a better suggestion, you can try contacting a dedicated support engineer to answer your questions.

Based on the above information, if you are a Power BI Pro licensee, you can create a support ticket for free and a dedicated Microsoft engineer will come to solve the problem for you.
It would be great if you continue to share in this issue to help others with similar problems after you know the root cause or solution.
