Multiple Datasource Credentials for the Same Server hostname

Hi Power BI Experts,

Could you please help understand and resolve the following issue?

We have a use case when data isolation is done on the datasource side (Snowflake) via user credentials (role).

User A will see different data from User B.

We have separate datasets in Power BI: Dataset A and Dataset B, located in different workspaces, but both these datasets need to point to the same snowflake account.

We want to provide different datasource credentials in Power BI Service per these datasets.

But currently every time after we update Dataset A credentials using User A credentials and refresh Dataset B  -> User B sees User A's data.

In one of the comments to post Power-BI-Database-Credentials-shared-across-PBIX-files   it was mentioned that "this feature is by design to avoid user from entering the credential multiple time if they use the same datasource."

---

Questions: Is there a way to disable this feature to be able to provide different credentials to datasets even though the server name is the same? How can we make sure which credentials are used currently?

Thank you!

Hi @Anonymous ,

As you can see in the other thread, this feature is designed to avoid users entering credentials multiple times when using the same data source. It cannot be disabled.

Normally these data credentials to verify the data source connections, you can't check finished configured credentials information. (these credentials also be encrypted for security reason when they use on gateway and data refresh)

As workaround, you can try to use another account to take over the dataset in one of the workspaces so that you can set different credentials for the two datasets.

Thank you, @Anonymous , for your answer and explanation.

Looks like, we will have to reconsider our data isolation design.

It would be great if this useful information would be included in Power BI documentation, if it isn't yet.

Thank you!
