Issues with Lab "Design a report in Power BI"

Hi all,

I'm working through the "Become a Data Analyst" collection of learning paths, currently I'm in the "Visualize data in Power BI" learning path, specifically on the "Work with Power BI visuals" module. And there I am stuck facing a 'technical' issue on the "Lab - Design a report in Power BI desktop" (explained further below).

I searched around on wild wild interwebs to no avail...

  • The issue is not mentioned in the FAQ & Troubleshooting on the Microsoft Learn support site
  • On Training Support  I found a post from another person facing the same issue (and also 23 other people seem to face it)
That person was kindly requested to 'create a feedback' on the Microsoft Learn support site
(btw, right above the 'Report Feedback there's an important info stating "Reporting feedback is a one way communication." In other words: feel free to ask us to help you but don't expect any replies from us... nice...)
  • Also found some posts raising the issue/question on StackOverflow, reddit and the likes... but no answers

I'm not sure this is the right place to post this 'cry for help', so feel free to point me in the right direction.

But I'm hoping this forum can help me to overcome the challenge... here goes

In the lab environment I am instructed as follows

  1. Open Power BI Desktop in the lab environment
  2. Open the lab08A pbix (Sales Analysis.pbix) and publish this on my Power BI workspace (linked to my account)
=> this works AFAICS, I see the pbix in my own Power BI environment, can open the report from there etc....
  3. Close and open Power BI Desktop (still in the lab environment)
  4. Create and save (in the lab environment) a new report (Sales Report.pbix)
    => This also works fine
  5. Create a 'live connection' to the 'Sales Analysis' dataset previously published to my own workspace
=> AFAICS this also works, I get asked my Power BI credentials, and after a few seconds I get the expected 'Got It' button
  6. Next the task is to design the report, starting with the first page (2 slicers + some graphs) => This is where things get stuck...
    1. First slicer (using Year field from Date Table) is created OK: I can adjust formatting / styling as instructed and I can select the required 'Year'
    2. Second slicer (using Region field from Region table) however I do not see the expected list of Regions appearing in the slicer
    3. All further visuals to be added exhibit the same issue: the visual does not present the data (no bars on bar chart, etc)
  7. By the way, the lab in the next module is also using the 'live connection' setup.... and yes, I face the same issue...

Any hints, suggestions, etc are welcome

@kochuyt

You may check Help tab on the lab side bar. By the way, Power BI Desktop is updated and released on a monthly basis, incorporating customer feedback and new features. Only the most recent version of Power BI Desktop is supported.

@v-chuncz-msft thanks for your reply, it is appreciated.

I should have mentioned in my post I also checked the Help sidebar in the Lab, but found no solution there either.

This is not to say that the Lab Help is not useful. The FAQ linked in the sidebar provides some very useful information on the Lab Interface, which helped me to get my keyboard settings adjusted for non-qwerty etc (which is good ;).

However, the 'no data showing up' issue I am facing is not mentioned in there. So on that point the sidebar did not help me to overcome the issue.

I did not use the 'Support Request' in the Help sidebar as I assumed this would take me to the "Report Feedback" page I already used. But I just clicked on the link and it seems to take me to a different entry form, which I'll give a try (so thanks for bringing that under my attention 😉

In the mean time, all other suggestions are of course still welcome!

As to Power BI Desktop version: The lab is supported through a virtual pre-configured environment containing Power BI Desktop and necessary data used in the lab. Given this I assume that MS ensures tool version and lab instructions remain in sync (not a naive assumption I think).

How did you go with this - its been a couple of years - so I'm hoping you cracked this nut and can steer new people on how to get this working off the bat?

It's odd the instructions from Microsoft are so poor...

They should lead someone from having set up everying as described - to the point of using it... not getting no-where the second we follow this :

  1. Sign in to PowerBI.com and open the US Sales Analysis report.

I mean really?

We follow all the instructions to install Nodejs, Visual Studio Code, install the CircleCare script, and then sign into Power BI and what.... magically the "US Sales analysis report" will just be there? ... 😐
