Error fetching data for this visual - An unexpected exception occurred (since October 2024 update)

Hey, ever since the october update my users get an error over several different models that I cant really find a solution to in Power BI Desktop.

The error is: “Error fetching data for this visual. An unexpected exception occurred”

This happens when adding measures to a visual. The measures themselves work fine if you add them to a card or just as the only field to a visual everything works just fine. Also the measures arent rocket science but just some simple sums or small calculates with filters.

If you add the measures and then publish to service the visuals work just fine. Just the desktop version is affected.

I am using import models that range from Blobstorage to Excel files, no matter if I have millions of rows or just a few thousand. All types of visuals are affected: New card visual, matrix, barcharts.

November update didnt fix the issue and I might have to roll back to september version if this isnt fixed.

I am having exactly the same problem. The visuals are failing when I add like more than two measures. It's only in Desktop.

I upgraded from the Aprill version to November version last week.

Hi  @Anonymous ,

We have seen on the internal platform that other engineers have reported this issue and submitted it.
The engineers on the product team are now aware and will do their best to resolve the issue. I will update here if there is any progress. Thanks for your patience.

Best regards.

Hey @Anonymous , thanks for letting me know.
Is there any chance you can give a ETA for the fix, considering its been there since october update.

I have the same problem. I am using the 32 bit version of Power BI. When I installed the 64 bit version PBIDesktopSetup_2.138.1203.0, the problem with displaying the visual was gone. However, the problem remains with the 32 bit version.

Same problem with January 2025 still. Keep having to reinstall September update.

Same happens to me still, it seems one of the common scenarios is using two measures in a single visual (ex. a table) which have different filtering for the same model column.

I'm also having the same issue with simple measures going into visuals. Any visual that has 2 measures in it doesn't work. Also any measure that's using another in its DAX doesn't display in the visual.

Same issue here. I can create a visual with 2 measures in the same visual, but if any of the measures are filtering off the same column then it will not work. Individually all measures will work, but put any 2 together with a filter and I get an error.

Also only an issue on the desktop (32 bit version here because the 64 bit doesn't work with my computer even though it is a 64 bit machine).  But if I publish the visual with the error on desktop it works fine in the workspace online.

I have been tearing my hair out with this!! But, I have just installed the (x64) version and it is all resolved. No measure errors 🙂
