'Couldn't load the model schema' message when connected to company VPN

When starting 64bit Power BI Desktop on Windows Server 2012, I immediately get the message "Couldn't load the model schema". Subsequently, When I try to load data, say an Excel file, I get the same message and the load fails.

If I disconnect from the company VPN, startup behaves normally, and the load of the Excel data does not fail.

Did you just launch the Sep 2017 version of PBI Desktop instead of opening a existing PBIX file?

If yes, could you please enable tracing for PBI Desktop, then collect the traces generated during the repro and provide the logs to us?

Best Regards,
Herbert

I did load the September update, but the problem precedes it. However, I did make the connection yesterday that if I don't start the 'Dell Secure Mobile Access' VPN, I don't have the problem when I read the Excel file. I would like to connect directly to the company database, however, rather than have to download the data and import it as a separate step.

I have a zipped traces folder. How do you propose I send it to you?

What is the location of the Excel file? You can upload the traces to online file service like OneDrive and then share it. Screenshot for the repro is also preferred.

Hi Herbert,

Thanks for the response. The Onedrive link below is a zip file that contains the Excel file, Trace folder, and requested images.

The 'Couldn't load the model schema' message happens only when connected to my company's VPN. It doesn't matter what Excel file I attempt to load. The error even occurs as soon as Power BI Desktop is started.

Thanks again for your help

Could you please also click 'Copy Details' on the error message and then provide it to me?

I have the same problem. When I am connected to my company VPN, I get the same could not load the model schema error right at launch. I am not even trying to open any file or load any dataset. Just double clicking the Power BI shortcut. The error does not show up if I launch power BI while disconnected from company VPN

Here is the result from Copy Details. I also shared out to onedrive the two files referenced in the details: FrownSnapShot244219990.zip and PerformanceTraces.zip.
