Connect PowerBI to 1010Data via ODBC Error

Power BI error “OLE DB or ODBC error: [Expression.Error] We couldn’t for the expression to the data source. Please try a simpler expression.”

This is a show stopper. We have to be able to use Direct Query against their data source that is hosted by 1010Data.  There is approximately 6 Petabytes worth of data in 1010Data, and they are not looking to import any data into Power BI…only Direct Query.

1010Data has an ODBC driver that we are using.  Here is the link to configuration of it: https://www2.1010data.com/documentationcenter/beta/ODBCUsersGuide/Connection.html

We are using the custom connector, located here: https://github.com/Microsoft/DataConnectors/tree/master/samples/ODBC/SqlODBC, in order to turn on Direct Query.

We can connect, select tables, and view the tables in Edit Query.  But, when selecting a field for a report…that is when the error occurs…and it doesn’t matter what field we select.

Error from Log File:

Error Message:
OLE DB or ODBC error: [Expression.Error] We couldn't fold the expression to the data source. Please try a simpler expression.

I have the 1010Data people involved, and they are not seeing any errors coming from their ODBC driver.  So, I need help assisting 1010Data in figuring out a solution.

If you all are the wrong group…please point me in the right direction.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi @Anonymous,

We use Power BI connected to 1010data too. Most of the issues come from the fact that 1010data does not support full SQL functionality, but I know they are working on that. Can you pass the blended SQL/Macro Query Language format via the Direct Query?

Thanks,
Jack
