The file cannot be opened because it contains a composite model with entity based query sources

Hello,

I have an issue regarding a Power BI file that i try to open. I tried to establish a Direct query connection between that power Bi file and the SAP data base (through a connector) then once i closed the file and tried to open it again, i couldn't open the file again and i had an error message saying that it is impossible to open that file because it holds a composite model with entity-based query sources. That file is really important for me and the service i am in and it took me a lot of time to make that dashboard and i really need to retrieve back my file because i can't even open it. Thank you for your help.

Here is the detailed feedback of the error message i had :

Hi @Anonymous ,

May I know whether the data sources of your pbix file are a Power BI dataset and a SAP HANA database? Did you connect to Power BI dataset with Direct Query mode to create composite model? If yes, what’s the data source of this dataset?

For Composite models, there are some considerations and limitations.

Hello @v-cazheng-msft , thank you for your reply,

The data source that i tried to establish a link with is a direct query to an SAP BW message thanks to a SAP .NET 3.0 Connector. I just made the connection, i didn't had time to make visuals that they blocked the access. I know that there are limitations regarding the possibility to connect tabular sources like SAP BW with composite models but  I didn't create a composite model tho, i didn't even went through the model clipboard to try to link several data.

I just want to be able to retrieve back my file, and see the visuals i previously created, even if it implies losing the direct query connection. Do you know if there is a way to disable or activate something so that i can access to the file without having that error message ?

Thank you 🙂

This just happened to me too. Any update?

I had a fully imported model that used SAP Hana, Onedrive Files, and Dataflows as the source data. Everything worked fine.
Then I added a Direct Query table to SAP Hana and I realised that I could no longer access the Relationships Pane. I then saved and closed, but when I tried to reopen the file, I got the same exact issue as above:
"This file cannot be opened because it contains a composite model with entity based query sources"

Could you solve the error? I have a file that I have not been able to open and I don't know how to recover it.

Just faced this same issue for seemingly no reason. Luckily I keep my model and dashboard as seperate .pbip files and was able to "create a local model" from the visual .pbip then save as and republish to the web and reconnect the visual file to this new model and things are working normally again.
