Start Issuing IP addresses for Azure Power BI services

Problem defination:

1. I am using Power BI cloud Services.

2. I have Azure SQL database (PaaS) in Azure VNET wherein I have allowed specific IP addresses.

Here I want solution so that I can allow only my "Azure Power BI services" to connect with "Azure SQL database (PaaS) instance configured in VNET".

To Achieve the same I need to add IP address of my Azure Power BI service to VNET NSG rule.

Qeustion: Is there any way to get IP address of Azure Power BI service?

Please take this very seriously as many people are running away from Power Bi Cloud solution due to immature security consideration. Atleast get this added as new feature. Please mention timelines if you are going to consider the same.

@Anonymous,

The IP address of Power BI Service can be different each time within each region as Power BI Service is a cloud-based service. You can download Microsoft Azure Datacenter IP Ranges and add required IP range based on your region in your firewall rule.

However, the IP range list is updated weekly, you would need to monitor it and make appropriate changes in your firewall rule.

Another method is to take advantage of gateway as described in this blog.

@v-yuezhe-msft do you mean that:

1. we need to get Azire VM up and runnin gwith static IP

2. Divert Azure Power BI Service connection traffic first to Gateway configured on Azure VM

3. Then Azure VM gateway would help us securely connect with Azure SQL database

Otherwise, your solution is for Power BI desktop.

Also, please let me know how to export report as PDF; as on today we have only export as .xsls or .csv file which is not sufficient. (Please note that I am embedding power bi report in web app. I am not using power BI desktop)

@Anonymous,

The above two methods are for Power BI Service. In your scenario, if you don't want to add Microsoft Azure Datacenter IP Ranges in firewall rule, you would need to install gateway as described in this blog, which will provide Power BI Service access to Azure SQL database.

In addition, export to PDF feature is currently in development, you can  check admin's response in this idea.

@Anonymous:

1. Yes, I don't want to add datacenter IP range in firewall rule.

2. As per your suggestion I need to install gateway; but to install gateway I need to provision VM/need to go with Power BI server solution, isn't it?

3. It seems Export to PDF is still in development and neither available in production nor in preview. Can you pease share date by when Export to PDF would be available?

4. I have tried to create report with 10K records wherein I want to have 50 rows on each page but I don't see paging feature in report.

Please share your POV and updates on the same.

Thanks.

@Anonymous,

2. Yes, you would need to provision VM to install gateway.
3. There is no ETA currently. If there are any updates, admin will post back in that idea.
4. If you mean paging feature in a table/matrix visual, please follow the guide in this blog.

Lydia
