Power BI Desktop "Recent sources" are not preserving recent nor pinned data sources after closing it

We are developing a connector for some of our costumers, we have received comments about that could be nice if there is a way to preserve the servers typed, so I was looking into the "Recent sources

I have found that the "Recent sources" menu in Power BI Desktop is not working (at least not as I expected), steps to replicate the issues:

  • Open Power BI Desktop
  • Click on "Get Data"
  • Get data from any data source (In this example an Excel workbook) and load it into Power BI Desktop
  • Click on “Recent sources” in the “Home” section of the ribbon.
  • The “Most recent” displays the loaded Excel workbook as expected.
  • Click on “More…”
  • The “Recent Sources” modal dialog is displayed showing the Excel workbook.
  • Click on the pin icon to pin that source.
  • The recent source is now pinned and shown in the “Recent Sources” sub-menu under the “Pinned”.
  • Save the .pbix file.
  • Close Power BI Desktop
  • Open Power BI Desktop
  • Click on “Recent Sources” in the Welcome screen.
  • PBI Desktop displays a the “Recent Sources” modal with the message “There are no recent sources to display.”
  • Close it.
  • Click on the “Recent sources” button in the “Home” section, there are not any recent or pinned.

Open the previous saved .pbix file, try to se the recent sources, there are not any recent or pinned source.

Can you please confirm that this issue has not been resolved and is still open

I can confirm that this issue still persists in latest March update: Version: 2.127.1235.0 64-bit (March 2024)

The last recent source I used showed up in the list after importing but is gone after restarting PBI.

I've just downloaded the May 2024 version.
Happy to report that the issue is solved for me.
I hope others have the same.

I checked, I have the same version. I connected to a database. It saved the source in the recent - within the file I was using.

Upon saving that file and then closing and re-opening blank document, this was gone.

So, not solved for me 😞

I am also seeing this problem - the "Recent Sources" is showing an ODBC source that I haven't used in forever...if I connect to a datasource that I want to use in a given session (using the Starburst connection) it will show in the "Recent Sources" only while that PBI Desktop instance is running - if I close it and go back in, it is gone again...only showing me the old ODBC source.

Also, if I actually click on the Starburst entry while using that same session, it says it's unable to connect with some message about "input task 'Source' is incomplete" ...???

The upshot here, and for everyone else, is that you kind of have to start from scratch every time you want to make a report.  Granted that PBI is actually storing the connection info in the Options - so, at least the authentication method/info is retained...but the product is close to unusable without Recent Sources working...?

Oh and I just upgraded to the latest version to see if it helped - it didn't.
