Power BI Desktop displays message "Retry without Web Account Manager" when attempting to launch

Hello,

With standard account, attempt to launch Power Bi Desktop results in message box stating:
"We couldn't authenticate your sign-in request.  To resolve this, retry again without Web Account Manager."
After clicking "Retry without.." button, I am prompted for credential (which is already in list) and after entering domain credential into Windows Security box, Power Bi Desktop opens. However, if Power Bi is closed and re-opened, process has to be completed again.

If the user account has local admin rights, login process is different (Web Account Manager message is not displayed) and upon closing and re-opening the user information is retained.

I have attempted to set the "Usea default browser" security setting but this does not change the behavior.

Any assistnace will be greatly appreciated.

Hi  @GenRider

1. What version of Desktop are you using?
2. Have you gotten this error before? Have you tried clearing the cache?

Hello, @Anonymous ,
1) Power Bi Desktop version: 2.119.986.0 64-bit (July 2023)

2) This issue has occurred on all machines in this pool of AVD machines since initial installation (this pool is UK-based).  I have another pool of machines that are US-based that do not have this issue.  I have even tested with the same image for both pools.  I am quite confident this is related to applied group policy, but don't have sufficient access to dig into all relevent policies, so I am at the mercy of other teams.

In an effort to steer the investigation, it would be great if I could determine from logging/tracing, etc. what is most likely triggering this weird behavior.

Following on your suggestions, the cache was cleared (after selecting the initial "Disable Web Account Manager" option).  I then closed Power Bi Desktop and re-launched, and still received the prompt to start with Web Account Manager disabled.  With this problem, the user account is never logged into at the launch of Power Bi Desktop and the credentials are not saved/rememberd for any launches later.

Thanks
Shawn

Do you have any further suggestions?
One detail (I believe I already mentioned): the issue is resolved if I make the user account a local admin on the machine, however, once admin rights are removed and user has logged out/in, the issue returns.

Thank you for your assistance

Hi  @GenRider

It seems to be related to user permissions. You can create a support ticket for free and a dedicated Microsoft engineer will come to solve the problem for you.

It would be great if you continue to share in this issue to help others with similar problems after you know the root cause or solution.

Hi, i dont know if this is useful but I had the same error coming up for a single user working on a single terminal server. I went through the event viewer and found the following error for the specific user who was gettng the error; research on that suggested clearing out the cache at %localappdata%\Microsoft\TokenBroker\Cache for the user effected. once I cleared out the cache then the error didnt come back. I had also rebooted the server so it is possible that the services re-enabled to prevent this error.
