POWERBI system out of memory exception

Dear all,

I had this issue on my former laptop and tried to solve this with changing the bits version installed on my pc.

Sadly enough I was not able to solve the problem like this. I saw though that my computer was really using a lot of memory to make POWER BI work.

So I ordered a new pc with lots of memory inside to finally be able to use POWER BI, to end up with the same issues.

I load two excel files into power BI, I sort some colums A to Z,  and I get the error message again.

Please advise, as I was so keen on using this program after a course and find me now ending up with a broken system.

Thanks a lot for your help,

I have now a 32 bits system of power bi and office

PC is windows 10, i7 processor, 64 bits and 16GB RAM.

Thought this would be sufficient and not the problem.

Hi @AMWILLEMS ,

Did you import large dataset into Power BI desktop? Please uncheck "Allow data preview to download in nthe backgroup" and check "Enable parallel loading of tables", test if this problem persists.

Besides, please update your desktop to the latest release Version: 2.68.5432.661 64-bit (April 2019) for a try.

Best regards,

Hello Yuliana Gu,

Thanks for the suggestions. I will try changing the options.

Paralel loading was already checked on, but I can uncheck "Allow data preview to download in the background"

Updating the software: I will do that as well, but I need to rely on our IT department as I do not have the license to do so.

I do not think it is a big database: 200 lines and 98 columns, so I do not realy believe in this as a cause.  I am not doing rocket science either,  currently I am  just using the program as a way of saving some re-organising steps in the database  and adding conditional colums.

kind regards,

Hi all,

I opened my file again, added two custom colums, sorted my data...

And again I got an error sytem out of memory, this time with the message unhandled exception.

I was just deleting some sorting orders, to keep the actions in my query editior clean, if I want to repeat them on a new dataset.

The software was not updated to the latest version yet, but the other options were changed.

What could be the problem? I tried reverting the excel file into a csv file before loading it into power BI but that did not do the trick either.

All help is appreciated.

Hi @AMWILLEMS ,

I was not able to replicate this problem on my side. I need to know detailed repro steps that were applied in Query Editor, as I supposed you sorted columns in Query Editor mode.

If possible, please send me a sample .pbix file which can repro this problem. Remember to avoid loading sensitive data into file before sharing.

Best regards,

Yuliana Gu
