Hierarchy support in slicer issue

Hi,

I have a peculiar bug to report.

Issue: The hierarchy feature in the slicer visual is available in Power BI even though the preview fearture "Hierarchy slicer" is not checked.

Why this is a problem: Using a hierarchy in the slicer without enabling the preview feature is buggy. The main problem here is that the collapse/expand generates an error message.

Effect: This will create a lot of issues for users that start using this feature without knowing about the preview feature setting. This buggy setup does not encourage Power BI usage among common users.

Suggested solution: Do not show heirarchy in slicer visual unless the preview feature is enabled. (I.e. show it like it was before this feature was added).

Hi @Anonymous,

Which Power BI desktop version do you run?

Based on my test in Power BI desktop version 2.78.5740.861 64-bit (February 2020), if the Hierarchy Slicer preview feature is not enabled, we can only drag one field to the slicer so there is no expand/collapse button.  Please run the same desktop version as ours then test again.

Hi Qiuyun,

It seems I run the same version. I created the Hierarchy in Power BI by simple drag and drop. I recreated the issue in a different setup with import from an SQL database. (Se image below)

BUT, I might have found out why you could not recreate it. Try the following steps to recreate:

1. Drag the dimension hierarchy into the blank "drawing surface" so that it by default creates a table.

2. Having the table visual, containing the hierarchy, selected click the slicer visual icon to turn it into a slicer.

3. See the slicer showing your hierarchy expanded by default.

4. Generate the error by trying to collapse the slicer hierarchy

(Tell me if I should add pictures of the steps if you cannot recreate it)

Thanks!

/Hannes
