**GLITCH:** DirectQuery on PBI Dataset breaks when dataset only contains measure table

I have a dataset I need to use across multiple reports that contains a collection of measures in a "measure table" (meaning a table with measures only and all columns deleted).

All of the measures are text measures, so there is no data being used. When I first connect to the dataset, everything works perfectly on Live connection. When I switch to DirectQuery, then it breaks.

Hi @arpost

You connected to a dataset and then convert it to DQ connection mode ? What is the data source of your dataset ? I found the same error, but it seems to be caused by the version of Desktop. What version of Desktop are you using ?

Post Prodigy

Greetings, @Anonymous,

I am running 2.106.883.0 64-bit (June 2022). After doing more digging, I figured out the cause after reading through the limitations on the Preview page: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/connect-data/desktop-directquery-datasets-azure-analysis-services#considerations-and-limitations.

The XMLA endpoint in the PBI Admin portal for our tenant was restricted to a specific security group; once I opened that up to the org, it worked! It is rather unfortunate, however, that DirectQuery on PBI Datasets requires org-wide XMLA access. Opens up a potential security risk that I hope Microsoft will address before this feature moves out of Preview stage.

Hi @arpost

I am so glad to hear that you found a workaround . I will change the status to "Delivered" .

As for the requirement you mentioned, you can share it on the Ideas forum. If a feedback is high voted there by other customers, it will be promising that Microsoft Product Team will take it into consideration when designing the next version in the future.
