Connecting to Power BI Dataset fails

I created a new dataset on my company Power BI Service. The dataset is published to my personal workspace for testing. I am using a Power BI Pro license.

I attempted to connect to this dataset via Power BI Desktop but it continuously fails. I also did enable "Direct Query for Power BI Datasets ..." which also seems to be required.

Status: Investigating

Hi @mickjaeger ,

In my tests, I can connect to the dataset in power bi normally. So I found the possible cause of the error based on your error message.

As the error message says: "Value cannot be null."

I think you need to make sure that there are no null values involved in your dataset.

There is a post similar to your error that I hope will help you.

Thanks for the response Selina.

The NULL values conversation is confusing to me. Of course many SQL tables will have potentially many NULL values and that should be normal and expected behavior. Power BI does weird and unexpected things when NULL values are present. As long as the NULL values adhere to SQL rules then Power BI should be able to import and manage these values as NULLs.

From my end I found I was able to open this Power BI Dataset into a new, blank report. The original error message occured when trying to add this online dataset into an existing Power BI Report. Not sure if that impacted this behavior.

In your opinion, does it matter if I'm creating a new report or editing an existing one? Seems to me that either operation should work.

Thanks again,

Mick
