Cannot open .pbip file: TypeError in DesktopExplorationProxyService (dataSourceVariables undefined)

I'm encountering an error when trying to open a .pbip file in Power BI Desktop. Can someone please help?

Environment:

  • Power BI Desktop version: 2.137.952.0
  • Report type: DirectQuery
  • File format: .pbip

Error details:

TypeError: Cannot set properties of undefined (setting 'dataSourceVariables') at DesktopExplorationProxyService.<anonymous>

Full stack trace indicates a failure to load the report with the error occurring in the desktop.js file at line 338458.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Save existing Power BI report as .pbip format
  2. Close Power BI Desktop
  3. Try to open the saved .pbip file
  4. Error appears and report fails to load

Actual behavior:

  • Report fails to load with TypeError related to dataSourceVariables

Impact: This blocks the ability to use .pbip format for version control and collaboration purposes.

Error occurs consistently on reopening the .pbip file

Report works fine in regular .pbix format

Hi  @nileshkemse

Have you tried opening a file in pbip format before? If you open the pbix file normally and then re-save it as a new pbip file, can you open it normally?
