An invalid connection string has at least one of the passed arguments...

Issue Short:

Switched data gateways, connecting with the same parameter strings from old to new data gateway, and am getting the banner message: "An invalid connection string has at least one of the passed arguments which does not meet the parameter specification. Please check the data source connection string.

Background:

I am developing a dashboard using the Desktop Power BI application, and had installed an on-premise data gateway (standard mode) on my machine so that the direct queries on my dashboard can make the necessary connections to my oracle database when my desktop Power BI dashboard is published to the cloud. Since hosting an on-premise data gateway (standard mode) on my laptop is not ideal, I switched my gateway connection to an on-premise data gateway (standard mode) on an always-on host (a server) in the same network.

Issue Details:

Now, when I view my direct-query reports, I get the grey box with big x in the middle displaying the message:  Couldn't load the data for this visual. Couldn't retrieve the data for this visual. Please try again later. Please try again later or contact support. If you contact support, please provide these details:

  • Client version2201.5.09798-train
  • Cluster URIhttps://wabi-us-gov-virginia-redirect.analysis.usgovcloudapi.net/

In my gateway data source settings that are for my new gateway connection, I have verified the connection strings are identical to my formerly connected data gateway. The data source settings also say "connection successful".

Please advise how I can solve this issue. Thank you.

Hi,

According to my research, a similar issue has been reported internally, so stay tuned. ICM: 288185073

Problem description: The customer has a report in Power BI Services which works fine, but after some time the visuals start showing "couldn't load data for this visual" this is happening to multiple reports connected to the same data source.

In the latest update of this ICM, the engineers are investigating this issue.

I will update here once I get any information.

Thank you very much!

Same thing is happening here. I have a report that connects to via DirectQuery to another dataset, bringing a single table from it. After publishing the report and pinning some tiles using data from this table, some users are able to see the tiles while others can't, with the same error "couldn't load data for this visual".

For some reasons, workspace administrators can see the tiles. Some members or viewers don't see them, but changing them to administrators dont fix it either. Removing the tiles and readding them while they are administrators sometimes fix the problem (not for all tiles, though). If I remove their Administrator permissions, they still see the tiles that were fixed. Other members or viewers don't see them.

I have the same issues with gateway, Oracle - New Gateway An invalid connection string has at least one of the passed arguments . My report is ok with PBI desktop ; however it's failure when i publish in PBI service. Please, help me if you are the same stuff.

Thank a lot

I got the same issue before, after giving read and write permission to the dataset. The error was removed.

@Ced-AlcarazCan you give a break down on how you gave the read and write Permissions?

@Oolawaleo When using Direct Query to a dataset you need to give Read and Write Permission on that specific user to the Dataset(now called Semantic Model). This is not a fullproof solution but it works.
Go to Semantic Model > Manage Permissions > Add user
