PowerBI Dataset works on desktop, but not in the online service.

I have created a report based on a PowerBI dataset, but after publishing online, The report does not show anything but huge X-s.

Can you tell me how to fix it without using Gateway?

May I know what’s the data source of your dataset? Could you please check in the downstream dataset settings page to see whether you need edit credentials there? If you click on the X-huges in your visual, will you see any error in detail?
