Creating Custom Measures using Python and R

Dear Power BI Development Team,

I am writing to propose a feature that I believe would greatly enhance the user experience and broaden the appeal of Power BI among data analysts and organizations.

Currently, Power BI uses its own language, DAX, for creating custom measures. While DAX is powerful and versatile, I believe that the integration of Python and R-based custom measures would offer significant benefits to the user community. Here are a few reasons why this feature would be beneficial:

  • Increased User Acceptance: Many data analysts and data scientists are already proficient in Python or R. Allowing them to use these familiar languages for custom measures would make Power BI more accessible and reduce the learning curve for new users.

  • Easier Migration: Organizations currently using Python or R for their analytical tasks would find it easier to integrate Power BI into their existing workflows. This would promote a smoother transition and wider adoption of Power BI as a primary business intelligence tool.

  • Enhanced Flexibility: Python and R offer a vast array of libraries and packages for statistical analysis, machine learning, and data manipulation. Integrating these capabilities directly into Power BI would empower users to perform more complex and advanced analyses without leaving the Power BI environment.

  • Community Support: The Python and R communities are robust and constantly evolving. By leveraging these communities, Power BI users would have access to a wealth of resources, tutorials, and support, further enriching their analytical capabilities.

I am known that Power BI already allows Python and R scripts for Visual Cards, and Data Transformations in Power Query. Hence, I am confident that adding this feature would significantly enhance the functionality of Power BI and attract a broader user base. I hope you will consider this proposal and explore the possibility of integrating Python and R-based custom measures into Power BI.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
