show progress when refreshing data

Currently when connecting to a new data source or manually refreshing an existing data set, we see "refreshing data" with a loading icon on the top right corner. Is there any way to see number or percent of rows being loaded? Sometimes data is being loaded for a long time and we might want to see if it's actually being loaded. Maybe we can gain insights on how to improve a specific data source too.

Thanks Derrick! Anyone else think this would be a useful addition? Please add your vote!

It'd be useful to know how many rows have been returned from a query as well. Perhaps in the field well on the right hand side you could show us the number of rows in a query?

I'm currently running a query in Power BI Designer. This is a very complicated query and takes minutes (sometimes hours) to run. In this case the query pulls data from a website, http://sqlblog.com, and as the query runs a modal dialog is shown saying: "Load Waiting for sqlblog.com" Every so often a little message pops up telling me how much data has been loaded "X rows loaded". That message only appears for less than a second though. We need better feedback than this. How about keeping that message visible constantly? Better still, show it constantly incrementing as new rows are loaded. I'd expect to see that at the very least.

This would be really useful, sometimes refresh hangs for 30 minutes and so for no apparent reason. If possible add stop button there as well. To manually kill refresh rather then to wait for failure

I agree with the other commenters - When querying a very large data source, optimization is always very important. Without a progress bar showing (as a % value) how long it will take to refresh data, it's very hard to determine how successful our optimization efforts have been. It seems archaic to have to "wait it out" when things like progress bars exist. This is especially important due to the required refresh mechanic whenever queries are modified. It's maddening to have work on a report blocked for an undefinable amount of time because Power BI demands a full refresh to apply query changes, over and over again while I'm optimizing. Knowing how long a refresh will take at least makes it possible to plan around it.

Please update on this feature? At least give us access to logfiles showing progress and operations so we can tail them.

Definitely worth it, you could produce an analytics report based on the speed for loading each query just like when analysing a website loading performance, I update more than 50 tables each time and aim to optimise them but indeed feedback is limited. Also, ignoring errors when refreshing (especially auto refreshing) would be great.

Given that PowerBI desktop shows exactly which data source and how many records are being loaded during a refresh, one would expect to have the same feature in the cloud version. It's disappointing that this is still not in place after being raised in 2014...
