Hello,
Pardon me if I sound ignorant but we're all very new to this and trying to complete the setup without contractors.
My origanization is currently setting up a brand new azure sql server in which we're now housing our data. We're currently running parallel and have gone through the steps to set up a private endpoint (the SQL server connector) and are awaiting the go-ahead to switch on the 'azure private link' in powerbi service.
I"m able to connect to the server through SSMS, and through powerbi desktop. I can load data, and publish the report, then get an error.
Failed to update data source credentials: Microsoft SQL: Reason: An instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. Connection was denied since Deny Public Network Access is set to Yes (https://docs.microsoft.com/azure/azure-sql/database/connectivity-settings#deny-public-network-access). To connect to this server, use the Private Endpoint from inside your virtual network (https://docs.microsoft.com/azure/sql-database/sql-database-private-endpoint-overview#how-to-set-up-p...)
From my understanding, this is because we don't have the 'azure private link' in powerbi switch turned on.
My question is whether turning on the azure private link will impact our currently functionality by disabling the on-premise data connection and basically turn everything off.
For reference- we're following the microsoft document 'enable-private-endpoints-for-power-bi', and trying to avoid having an outage for testing the interaction.
Thanks for the help!

Hi @ucmaoTWG ,
Normally, we don’t need configure on-premises data gateway for cloud data sources for it can be directly accessed by Power BI. But if Power BI couldn’t straightly connect to the data source, on-premises data gateway is still needed even it’s a cloud data source. For most data sources in Azure, gateway is not required since they are in the same private network. But there does exist some exceptions. Here is a list contains data sources supported by Power BI and whether gateway is needed for them. You may refer to it and make relevant configurations.
