Edit data set published report

Hi everyone,

I'm quite new to PowerBi but I have a report I created a while back and published. I now would like to go back to the original data source and see it as a table with all the columns and the added measures I created. I can't find a way to do this.

I understand that I need to do this through Desktop (download the report), which I don't mind, but every time I try to do go to 'transform data' it opens up Query 0 but not my table. Could someone kindly tell me how to do this step by step? I have tried downloading the report to my desktop and open it that way ... I've tried everything I can think of ... I just would like to go back to be able to see that original table I created.

Many thanks

ah, thanks @v-tangjie-msft , this appears to be the case therefore I can't change it.

If it's of any use for others this is the work around I have found (although clearly not ideal). I was able to save the datamodel to my desktop and then open it in the desktop app. This helps me explore the datamodel and see the formulas if I need to do that. I can also download the visuals in another file then copy and past across to recreate my original report. It's not ideal but it appears to work.

Hi @LauraH ,

If your semantic model is Direct Query, download the pbix file and open it, then in the bottom right corner convert it to connection mode for import and you can see the data in transform data. If your semantic model is Live Connection's connection mode, then the data is not visible, you can create a visual object of the table dragging in the desired columns and then export the data to see the original data.
Other than that, the solution in this post might be helpful.

thank you so much @v-tangjie-msft for taking the time to give me some real useful insights. I have followed your advice and when I open the downloaded file on power bi desktop, I see that it is on direct query. However, I do not have option to change the storage mode as it is grayed out. Any suggestions? I'm really grateful for your help.

Hi @LauraH ,

It works fine for me through my tests. Did you have the original file in live connection connection mode and then converted to direct query connection mode? If so there is no way to convert to import mode again.

Hi @LauraH ,

Thanks 3CloudThomas  for your attention to this issue. I have some other thoughts to add:

You can click Transform Data to enter Power query, right-click the table, copy a table, delete the step in the right step bar, keep only the source step, and then click Close and Apply. Then go back to PBI Desktop, click on the refresh tab of the tab, at this point you can see the latest raw data, and then you can create new measures as needed.

Thank you @v-tangjie-msft. Unfortunately that didn't work.

When I click on Transform Data, all the opions I have is a blank query 0 there is no other table I could chose.

I tried right-clicking on the table I want, but the only way to do that is on the data model (the one that shows the relationships). When I right-click on that I have no opion to copy the table.

I tried creating a brand new report then connecting to the same data model, but that is exactly the same.

I'm sure others have found a way around this, I can't be the only one who wants to go back to the data table of a published report!

Thank you all for your help

Thank you @3CloudThomas  for your swift reply. No, I did not enter the data manually. I have a bunch of tables, some with  a mix of data and measures I created, all the tables are linked together in relationships etc. I want to be able to get back into one of those tables (or maybe all of them, it's my dataset after all!) and be able to create new measures, see how the old ones were created (I don't remember them all) etc. The datasource is sharepoint, in case that's relevant.

Query 0 is all I get when I click on 'transform data' but what I want is to enter into my original tables that are live feeding data from sharepoint.

If you have any idea on how to do that, I would be really greateful. I'm going round in loops.

Many thanks

If you manually entered the data in Power BI, it would be in the list where you see query0
