Visuals Not Refreshing In Power BI Service

Data Source: Salesforce Reports

I created a simple dashboard on Power BI desktop that I published to Power BI Service that doesn't refresh visuals even though the data set properly refreshes with no issues. I refresh manually in the desktop, and also in Power BI service. The desktop version will update visuals, but the visuals do not update in the refresh for Power BI Service. They're simple bar graphs I created from KPI cards based on a number count of fields completed and fields incomplete. The bar graphs are simply to track data quality. My data source connection settings have no issues. Does anyone have any idea how to get my visuals to refresh in PowerBI Service? Thank you a million.

In Power BI, there is an important distinction between reports and dashboards:

  • Dashboards, in the technical sense, can only be created in the Power BI Service. They allow you to pin visuals from multiple reports to a single view.
  • What you’ve created in Power BI Desktop is technically a report, but it can function similarly to a dashboard by consolidating key visuals (bar graphs, KPIs, etc.) on a single page.

If your aim is to have a fully interactive and consolidated view accessible to others:

  1. Publish your report to Power BI Service.
  2. In the Service, you can pin visuals or entire report pages to create a true dashboard.

This setup ensures your data is up-to-date and provides a seamless experience for tracking and sharing insights.

Hi sandeepsai! Thank you for this answer because I think too that this was the issue! As I noticed the formats of what got published to Service, one is a data set and the other is a report. I noticed under the ‘dashboards’ tab, there’s nothing listed. And I was wondering if that was the issue, that technically its not a dashboard and that’s why the visuals don’t update. Thank you for this information about the distinction between dashboards and reports.

My goal is simply to create a dashboard of data quality or key metrics, and have these dashboards refreshed daily/weekly. I want these dashboards accessed via PowerBI Service and when the scheduled refresh goes through, the user should see the dashboard’s data up to date and current.

How I started was I created KPI cards in PowerBI in effort to try to make a dashboard. The data quality bar graphs which is the issue I posted about, are bar charts. But the issue will be common with both, since I created both in Desktop and want the visuals to be refreshed on daily/weekly basis on Service. What you’re saying is I need to create these dashboards in Service. Is your recommendation to create from scratch in Service or as you say, I have my report published in Service now and pin visuals or entire report pages to create a true dashboard?

Thank you,

Hi @bipowerbi , hello sandeepsai  and Singamshetty994, thank you for your prompt reply!

According to your description, the visuals on the page are not refreshing and the refresh issue is not related to the dashboard or report page.

Please check the refresh history of the senmatic model for more clues:

Hi @bipowerbi

1. Verify Data Refresh Settings

  • Ensure the dataset is configured for scheduled refresh and check if it manually refreshes without issues.

2. Check Data Source Credentials

  • Confirm that the data source credentials in Power BI Service are valid by checking the Settings of your dataset.

3. Review Filters and Slicers

  • Examine any report-level, page-level, or visual-level filters to ensure they are set correctly and not restricting your data.

4. Check Dataset Refresh Status

  • After refreshing, check the Refresh history in the Power BI Service to ensure the refresh completed successfully without errors.

5. Visual Level Filters

  • Ensure there are no visual-level filters that could limit the data displayed in your visuals.

6. Check KPI Card Settings

  • Verify that the KPI cards and their associated calculations or measures are accurately defined and properly set up.

7. Refresh Visuals Manually

  • Try manually refreshing the visuals within the report view in the Power BI Service to update them.

8. Publish Latest Version

  • Confirm that the latest version of your report is published to the Power BI Service after any changes in Power BI Desktop.

9. Browser Cache

  • Clear your browser cache or try accessing Power BI Service from another browser or an incognito window.

10. Contact Support

  • If problems persist, consider reaching out to Microsoft Support or community forums for additional assistance.

By following these ten points, you can systematically troubleshoot the visual refresh issues in Power BI Service.
