Using Active Directory Service Principal authentication as SQL data source credentials

I am trying to authenticate as a service principal to a PowerBI SQL DW data source.

The way to authenticate using any other client is documented here https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/connect/ado-net/sql/azure-active-directory-authentication?view=... , using the client id and secret as credentials. I am unable to set these credentials to the PowerBI data source, they are being rejected.

Is there any supported way to authenticate to an SQL data source as a service principal?

It's a Synapse dedicated pool. I'm trying to get PowerBI to connect to it through the service principal credentials (client id and secret). I would need to enter these credentials somewhere (the PowerBI service UI, or the equivalent REST API call), but they are not accepted.

The link you sent me is about authenticating through the ADAL python library using access tokens, I am not sure how this is applicable to my request.

Have you ever solved this? I have the same question.
