Update Power BI report

Hi EVeryone,

I'm very new to PBI and I've been asked to update an existing PBI report that's stored in SharePoint with new data, and then upload the report back into the Sharepoint w/ the new changes.

Would someone be so kind as to assist me w/ the following questions:

1) How do I find the datasource for the Power BI report that's in SharePoint? I've tried everything and nothing points me in the right direction

2) Does the update need to be made on the original data source?

3) I am not certain about what the original datasoure is, but it may be housed on AAD datahub.  Therefore, will I have to add the new data using a code?  (hopefully not because I do not know how to code 🤔)

4) once I figure out how to update the datasource, how do I update that data onto the existing PBI report and keep it in SharePoint?

By the way, this is an ad-hoc report that is due tomorrow (12/29/22)

Please help!

      Hi lbendlin

I've taken over the reporting role and all PBI reports are in SharePoint, but I'll keep your feedback in mind.

I've discovered that the datasource is in a datahub that's on a server.

Now that I know the datasource, can you help with the remaining questions (please):

      2) Does the update need to be made on the original data source?

      3) I am not certain about what the original datasoure is, but it may be housed on AAD datahub.  Therefore, will I have to add the new data using a code?  (hopefully not because I do not know how to code)

      4) once I figure out how to update the datasource, how do I update that data onto the existing PBI report and keep it in SharePoint?

      Thank you in advance.

Anonymous storing PBIX on a sharepoint folder is not a bad idea if the files are small (or you have a large quota) and file versioning is enabled.

Anonymous You will want to open the PBIX file with Power BI Desktop and then check if you can refresh the data after specifying your credentials.  After that you can decide what you want to do next - for example if you need to share the report via a workspace.

Is this report on a shared capacity or on a premium capacity?  the report is on my teams SharePoint, so shared capacity I assume.

What role do you have in the workspace? "workspace member, all permissions"

thanks, I hope you can help

The simplest way to check datasource is to open within the file Data source settings.

Could you tell me what is the reason to store Pbix file within sharepoint? Its not a standard practice when you can download the file from pbi service workspace

The established connection with credentials allows you to refresh updated data from datasource, pbi service to be more clear. Automatic refresh/ incremental refresh of dataflows/ dataset
