Refresh Dataser for every 5 mins

We would like to refresh Power BI dataset for every 5 minutes. What are the feasible options for us?

Please note that we are using Power BI Pro license

Riesh

With Power BI Pro, you cannot refresh every 5 minutes.

Options:

1.Scheduled refresh: max 8x/day (~every 3 hours) → Pro only.

2.DirectQuery / Live connection: queries source in near real-time.

3.Push/Streaming dataset: data pushed from source in near real-time.

4.Premium license: allows up to 48 refreshes/day (~every 30 minutes).

For true 5-minute refresh, you need DirectQuery, push dataset, or Premium.

Hi @ribisht

I would just like to point out if you are using Power BI Premium or Premium per user with a combination of using Power Automate you can refresh it every five minutes. The 48 refreshes per day that the other people have mentioned up above is a graphic UI interface limitation but you can use it via the API and refresh it as often as you like.

Hi @ribisht

With a Power BI Pro license, the shortest refresh interval you can configure in the Power BI Service is 8 refreshes per day (not every 5 minutes). A refresh every 5 minutes is only possible with:

  • Power BI Premium / Premium per user (PPU) >> allows up to 48 refreshes per day (roughly every 30 minutes).

  • DirectQuery or Live Connection >> instead of scheduled refresh, queries are sent to the source in near real time. You can control cache refresh down to 1 minute in Premium, but in Pro it’s limited.

  • Hybrid approach >> If your source supports it, you can model the dataset in DirectQuery mode (or a mix with Import) to get up-to-date results without constant refreshes.

What about using power automate?

Hi @ribisht

Power Automate won’t help here unfortunately. It can only trigger a dataset refresh, but it cannot bypass the Power BI Service refresh limits. With a Pro license you’re still restricted to 8 refreshes per day, and with Premium (capacity or PPU) you can go up to 48 per day. So even if you use Power Automate, it will fail once you hit those limits.
