Problems with sharing/permissions

I have a report that's shared via a tile in SharePoint. To share I used the link that comes up when the report is opened in the service and then gave applicable people direct access. When people that don't have access attempt to view the report, they receive a message that Permission is Required, but they aren't able to request access - is that because I didn't share by creating/copying a link?

Hi @mterry ,

It is recommended that instead of directly copying the URL link of the report you should click on Share and copy the link, the direct copying of the link assumes that your colleague already has access to the particular report.

Secondly, make sure that the person being shared is in the same domain as you, if not set them as a guest user.

Additionally, make sure that the person being shared has access to the semantic model of the report, you might consider granting them the role of workspace

Hi @mterry

When you share a direct link to a Power BI report, users without access can't request access. To allow them to request access, you need to use the "Copy link" option from the Share menu in Power BI. This generates a link that lets users request access if they don't have permission.

Hi @mterry,

Which specific link did you use, did you use a sharing link?

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/collaborate-share/service-share-dashboards#share-a-report...

You can also check the current permissions by using the manage permissions option:

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/collaborate-share/service-share-dashboards#manage-permiss...

Or did you use a different type of link?

Happy to help out 🙂

I share #PowerAutomate and #SharePointOnline content on my Blog, Bluesky profile or Youtube Channel

I didn't use a sharing link, just the link that comes up when I access the report directly. It's odd because some people are being prompted to request access, and others are receiving a notice that they need to contact the data set owner (they don't have a direct button to click on to request access).
