Hello,
Currently, we are using PowerBI service with azure synapse sql that is behind a VNET using the on-prem gateway. If we enable the private link for PowerBI service can we use the azure synapse sql that is behind a VNET without a gateway?
One of the challenges we are facing with using a gateway with azure synapse is that we need to create a gateway connection with a service account. This stores the service account credentials in the gateway connection when a dataset/dataflow does a import it will use the service account credentials. This makes it difficult to track on synpase side which end user ran the query because we have to use a service account for gateway configuration.
Alternative, is for users to have their own gateway connection which saves their credentials, but for a large organization this means having hundreds of connections with same server/database but each have their own connection which seems like too much to upkeep.
Trying to see what options are available when connecting from PowerBI service to other microsoft solutions without the need for gateway or service accounts.
Hello,
Even if i use the VNet gateway same challenges are present. U have to configure the Vnet gateway connection with a service account too or create hundreds of single connection for end users with their own credentials.
I see same issues/challenges will be present in both on-prem gateway and VNet gateway because it is still a gateway.
The only real solution I see is having powerbi service and synape SQL be on the same VNet but seems impossible with PowerBI being a public cloud option.
Why are you using the On-Prem gateway rather than the VNet gateway?
