I'm afraid I gave up as we couldn't find a way to get this working.

while a positive expression and very enthusiastic - this is NOT a solution and shouldn't be marked as one ...as of this writing there is no solution in this thread. For my own experiences we just ignored the 'test' of the credential and let the Data Connector be configured with our gMSA and blank password. However it failed to refresh. So we will be implementing a Service Account dedicated for this purpose and with a non-expiring password ...not as secure as a gMSA would be unfortunately. Our gMSA is used with the On-Premises Gateway. This is fairly straightforward to set up as far as gMSA account setup goes.

In my experience whenever a GMSA is used in a login UI where a password is mandatory, any password will do since MSA authentication doesn't actually utilise a supplied password. So just mash the keyboard and test it out.
Obviously this doesn't apply in every situation but hopefully it'll assist you here.
