Intermittent refresh failure - data source timed out - enterprise gateway

Hello

We are really struggling with this error. Internal trouble shooting has not yielded anything and we do not know how to proceed with these problems.

We have a lot of datasets scheduled to refresh daily and these timeouts seems random, being different datasets and tables each time. However it always seems to be on prem SQL Server sources that time out.

Recently upgraded the gateway to October 2019 (Release 2)) but the problem persists.

How can I get more detailed error descriptions for the refresh activities below?

Hi @Anonymous ,

Some customers may experience intermittent refresh issues during peak usage times. Please have a try again in spare time.

If you still have this issue for Power BI, you'd better create a support ticket in Power BI Support , Scroll down and click "CREATE SUPPORT TICKET", to get further help.

So i opened the Manage gateways section in the Service and there was some exclamation marks.

The dissapeared almoust instantly but i managed to take a screenshot.

The gateway message is exaclty the same error message that i get for my scheduled refresh.

This was a folder data source however, and they never fail..  this is very strange.

Hi @Anonymous ,

There are several points you may considerate:

1.Ensure that you've added one or more data sources of your dataset to the gateway, as described in Add a data source.

2.Verify that you have the correct username and password. Also, verify that those credentials can successfully connect to the data source. Make sure the account that's being used matches the authentication method.

3.Your data source credential may expire, so try to update the credential and republish the report. In Power BI, go to refresh settings for the dataset. In Manage Data Sources, select Edit credentials to update the credentials for the data source.

4.If your dataset not only contains cloud data source but also the on premise data source, then it needs to use the gateway and configure schedule refresh, see more: :On-premises data gateway , Configure scheduled refresh .

Note that you also need to select Allow user's cloud data sources to refresh through this gateway cluster option Under Gateway Cluster Settings. See: Merge or append on-premises and cloud data sources.

5.Please make sure the gateway is online, and try to upgrade the gateway to latest version.

You may resolve the issue via the troubleshooting link :https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/refresh-troubleshooting-refresh-scenarios .

If you still have this issue for Power BI, you'd better create a support ticket in Power BI Support , Scroll down and click "CREATE SUPPORT TICKET", to get further help.

Best Regards,

Amy

I've been personally suffering what is described here:

We are going to attempt a trial of the supplied solution soon.  Perhaps the testing and resolution described here might be useful to you as well?

@ross TY, very interesting.

I set up a trace in the local datawarehouse and the queries that time out never get requested.  So it is probably not a command timeout?

I downloaded the pbix and the report creator had set 99999 as command timeout in the source advanced options .

Now what? Where do I look next?

If this i a service/gateway issue, then this is very dissapointing.

@v-xicai  do you mean peak usage times locally at my company or peak usage time in the pbi service?

If this is a service issue, it is absolutely unacceptable that it is not more evident in the error messages. We are spending a lot of resources troubleshooting these problems.

You could at least offer a retry after x minutes setting..

@Anonymous Go to the server you have the gateway installed on and follow these instructions to access the log files. There should be a lot more detail in there to help you troubleshoot. - https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/data-integration/gateway/service-gateway-tshoot#collect-logs-from-the-on-premises-data-gateway-app
