Change Gateway node as Primary (Take ownership of gateway)

Hi,

We have 4 gateways currently, like Gtw 1,2,3, 4 and now we planning to delete the old gateway 1 and 2 where gtw is primary and now we want to make gateway 4  as primary. What could be step by step process?

I appreciate any help anyone can provide.

Hi @VV_user

To make Gateway 4 the primary and decommission Gateways 1 and 2, follow these steps:

  1. Set Up Gateway 4:

    • Configure Gateway 4 with the same data sources and credentials as Gateways 1 and 2.
    • Test data source connections on Gateway 4.
  2. Reassign Datasets:

    • In Power BI Service, switch dataset gateway connections from Gateways 1 and 2 to Gateway 4.
    • Test dataset refreshes to ensure Gateway 4 works properly.
  3. Set Gateway 4 as Primary:

    • If part of a cluster, make Gateway 4 the primary in Manage Gateways.
  4. Test and Validate:

    • Run manual refreshes and monitor schedules to confirm Gateway 4 is handling all workloads.
  5. Remove Gateways 1 and 2:

    • Backup necessary configurations, remove data sources from Power BI, and uninstall Gateways 1 and 2.
  6. Update Documentation:

    • Record the new gateway setup and communicate changes to relevant stakeholders.

This ensures a smooth transition with minimal disruption.

Hi @VV_user  , thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Fabric Community Forum.

Please consider below steps to change the primary gateway from Gateway 1 and 2 to Gateway 4:

  1. Ensure you have backups of any important data or configurations associated with Gateway 1 and 2.
  2. Go to the Power BI Admin Portal. Navigate to the "Gateways" section and select Gateway 1 and 2. Click on "Delete" to remove them from your setup.
  3. Install Gateway 4 on the desired machine if it's not already installed.
  4. Open the Power BI Gateway Configuration Tool. Sign in with your Power BI account. Select "Migrate, restore or takeover an existing gateway." Choose Gateway 1 or 2 to migrate to Gateway 4.
  5. Ensure that Gateway 4 is now listed as the primary gateway in the Admin Portal. Check that all reports and dashboards are functioning correctly with the new primary gateway. If necessary, update any data sources or connections to point to Gateway 4.

If this helps, please consider marking it 'Accept as Solution' so others with similar queries may find it more easily. If not, please share the details.
Thank you.

Hi @v-hashadapu ,

If we remove Gateway 1 or 2 first in Step 2, will they still appear in the Gateway 4 migration section as options to choose from?

Hi @VV_user , thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Fabric Community Forum.

No, if you delete Gateways 1 and 2 first, they will no longer be available for migration in Gateway 4. I apologize for not stating it correctly and causing confusion, and I appreciate you @vaibhav_09 for pointing it out.

Below is the correct process:

  1. Go to Gateway 4 -> Open the Power BI Gateway Configuration Tool. Choose "Migrate, Restore, or Take Over an Existing Gateway." Select Gateway 1 or 2 and complete the migration.
  2. Verify that Gateway 4 is now primary in the Power BI Admin Portal.
  3. Test all data connections and reports to ensure they work with Gateway 4.
  4. Once confirmed, delete Gateways 1 & 2.

If this helps, please consider marking it 'Accept as Solution' so others with similar queries may find it more easily. If not, please share the details.
Thank you.

Question:

Q.1 How can we do it via on-premises?

Q.2 before doing it do I need to delete gtw 1 and 2 ?
