Dashboard Visual keeps changing

I have a dashboard with some pin tiles from a report but also from asking questions about the data.

From asking questions about the data, the conclusion presents itself as a bar chart, but I want it as pie chart. I select this in the visualisation, yet when it pins it goes back to the bar chart.

How do I make it stay as the pie chart?

Hi @SamfarUK,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Fabric Community.

When we use the "ask a question about your data" feature in Power BI to create a visual, the tool automatically selects the best visual type for example bar chart. While we can modify it for example to a pie chart. But the Q&A-generated visuals do not retain visualization changes when pinned to a dashboard. Instead they revert to their default type when pinned.

To ensure that the visual stays as a pie chart in the dashboard, follow below steps:

  • Use the Q&A feature to generate the desired insight visual.
  • Modify the visual to a pie chart using the visualization toolbar.
  • Click on "Save as a Report" and after that open the saved report in power bi.
  • Pin the pie chart from the report instead of directly from Q&A
  • Now, the pinned visual will remain as a pie chart in the dashboard.

Since power bi does not retain visualization changes for Q&A-generated visuals when pinned, saving it as a report converts it into a standard visual, which allows power bi to persist changes. So, save the Q&A visual as a report first and then pin it from the report. This should solve your issue.

So it's not user error then, it is the way it dashboard functionality is built. Not very helpful in my opinion, especially when trying to get new users to PBI, they think it's frustrating enough to work with. Thank you for your response however. I will use the "question" to force it into the visual I require. Hopefully someone at Microsoft or PBI will see this!

Hello @SamfarUK

When you pin a visualization (e.g., from a report or Q&A) to a dashboard, Power BI treats it as a static snapshot of the visualization at that moment. Any subsequent changes to the visualization in the report (e.g., changing it from a bar chart to a pie chart) will not automatically update the pinned tile on the dashboard

here is how yiu can fix it :

  • Change the visualization type in your report  to a pie chart.
  • Delete the existing tile from your dashboard.
  • Re-pin the updated visualization to your dashboard. This ensures that the new pie chart is displayed

Or

Instead of pinning individual tiles, consider using the "Pin Live Page" option. This pins an entire report page to your dashboard as a live tile. Unlike individual tiles, live pages reflect any changes made in the report, including updates to visualizations

If this is helpful , please accept the solution

Hello! I don't think these solutions will fix the problem.

The visual being used in the dashboard is not a visual in the report. It is driven by "ask a question about your data" to bring a new visual to add to the dashboard. It automatically creates it as a bar chart, I change it to a pie chart int he visualizations toolbar, pin it, go to dashboard and see it has pinned as a bar chart instead of the pie chart. How do I keep it as the pie chart?
