Can't create composite model as 'data source Folder is missing credentials'

Hi everyone,

Did something about composite models change since I last used one? I have this scenario:

Dataset A is published to workspace A and uses three cloud data sources (sharepoint and web). These are all set up with credentials and the scheduled refresh works as it is supposed to.

Dataset B is published to workspace B and uses a mix of local data sources (folders and excel files) and one cloud (sharepoint again). This is unable to refresh in the Service as we do not have a gateway set up, so this is refreshed in Power BI desktop and republished.

I want to use one table from dataset A in dataset B, so I created a direct query to A, making B a composite model.

This works perfectly fine in Power BI desktop but as soon as I publish I get the error 'The data source Folder is missing credentials and cannot be accessed'.

The data source credentials on the composite model's dataset are greyed out.

All I need is the data from one table in dataset A and all of dataset B as it was publsihed. I don't need anything to refresh, so I didn't think gateways and credentials would be important?

So this page has the line under "Working with a composite model based on a dataset or model"

• To build reports in the Power BI service on a composite model that's based on another dataset, all credentials must be set.

I guess that includes the data sources in both models and as it's impossible to set credentials up for a local source without a gateway that now needs a gateway to work.

(I don't think that was the case before)

To share a dataset across workspaces, you have to have build permissions with that dataset.  This article has an explanation:  Manage dataset access permissions - Power BI | Microsoft Learn

Hi @collinq 

I do have build access and I am an admin in both workspaces. 

I've tried another test within one new workspace and the same thing happens.

I've created two datasets (both with local sources). One gets a table from the other, which is fine in desktop but then "There is no gateway to access the data source test 2".

I'm sure you didn't need a gateway setup to do this before (I must have managed it without one).
